Creating a Social Media Content Calendar

Creating a Social Media Content Calendar

Social media content calendars give your brand structure for what to post. Here are some tips on how to create the perfect content calendar for your business.

Decide what type of content works best for your brand

Social media posting varies based on the industry. You should research and figure out what works best for yours! Three ways to research this are:

  • Check out competitors- See what others are doing with their social media accounts to give you inspiration. Be careful not to copy though!
  • Experiment for a period of time- Choose a few months to test different types of content. Once this time period is over, take note of what drew the most attention!
  • Determine what content has worked best in the past- View metrics of past posts to see how many views/engagement previous posts have gotten. If you’re looking for Facebook or Instagram metrics, you can view them by visiting the Meta Business Suite.

Research what platforms will work best & how many posts should go out

Make sure you are choosing platforms that work the best for your brand. For example, you might not want to post to a platform like TikTok if you’re a professional business such as an accounting firm. Once you choose your platform, take a look at the recommended amount of posting for that platform. We’ve included a chart for you to view below.

How Often You Should Post on Social Media Platforms

Create content pillars

Next, you’ll create your content pillars! These are topics or subjects that you can create content around that serve as your “foundation” for social media posting, blog writing, etc. For example, if you were an electrician, you could post how-tos, information about your services, and tips. When creating your content pillars, also keep in mind the 80/20 rule. The rule says about 80% of your content should be entertaining or informational, while only about 20% should be selling.

Create your calendar!

Once you determine all of the above, it’s time to create your content calendar! Create a spreadsheet or print out a calendar to write in what days and times you’ll be posting, what content you’ll post, and which platforms you will be posting to. Be sure to incorporate appropriate holidays and special days into your content.
