Using Humor in Your Business Marketing

According to a study done by HubSpot, the number one reason why consumers remember an ad is because it was funny. Laughter decreases stress, lowers blood pressure, and, also, can help with pain! People want a getaway when viewing their favorite form of entertainment, so why not make your ad part of that entertainment? When humor is appropriate for your brand, why not try it?

How Do You Determine If Humor Is Right For Your Business Marketing?

Humor should be well-thought-out before it is applied to your marketing plan. A poorly-planned joke could make consumers view your brand negatively, which is definitely not what you want! Jokes in marketing should be positive and evoke positive emotions. Before you think of using humor in your plans, you need to ask yourself: “Who are my customers?”, “Do I think my customers would enjoy this joke?”, “Is my brand too serious for this?”, among other questions.  If you’re a funeral home, using humor in advertising could be poorly timed. However, if you’re at a restaurant with a fun atmosphere, it could be great to post something funny every so often!

How To Implement Humor In Your Marketing

Keep your jokes short, sweet, and simple to minimize confusion. Don’t overcomplicate things because people won’t get it. Simple jokes and ideas can be replicated later down the line into other jokes by changing the plot or subject of the idea. Memes are a great example of this! Just put together a funny picture or gif with a relatable caption, and you have yourself a great social media post or ad! Keep in mind, however, you do not want to post anything that will step on anyone’s toes.

When a brand goes a humorous route in marketing, it can make the brand seem more memorable and human. If your business needs help bringing life to your social media pages, contact us here at The Digital People.
